Consumption of this rare Chinese herbal, technically a lichen, dates back to at least the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) when it was, as the Compendium described, harvested by the native inhabitants of Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. These ancient people discovered the plant growing in snowy reaches around 4000 meters above sea level.
Said to sprout when snow starts to fall, and flower when blanketed by it, Snow tea quickly finding favour with traditional Chinese herbalists. Brewing it into a tea, they used it to treat everything from frayed nerves to insomnia, hypertension, sore throats and weight gain - thanks to its ability to speed up the body's metabolism. A fascinating herb with a rich history.
