Throughout its history as a therapeutic plant, Alder Buckthorn has been prized by natural health experts for its ability to ease constipation and other ailments of the digestive system. Its efficacy in this regard is said to be due to the presence of anthraquinone, a class of naturally occurring phenols, in particular frangulin, a compound that forms part of the plants Latin name. According to some recent studies, the presence of anthraquinone may also give the plant, and a tisane made from its bark, cancer-fighting properties. (This has yet to be substantiated however.) Interestingly, Alder Buckthorn charcoal is also used in the manufacture of gunpowder.
Our version, Organic Alder Buckthorn Bark has been sourced from organic farms and was grown completely free of any chemical input. Once harvested, it is cured, aged, and cut for addition to custom herb and tea blends, or for use on its own as a single infusion. When infused, it offers a robust, earthy flavor that tends slightly bitter on the tongue. Enjoy.
