About this Botanical:
Our Conventional Alder Buckthorn Bark has been cured, aged, and cut for addition to custom herb and tea blends, or for use on its own as a single infusion. When infused, this naturally caffeine-free herbal tea offers a bright, earthy flavor with woody notes and a slightly bitter finish.
Officially in use since the 1600s when it was listed in a primary medical reference, the London Pharmacopeia, Alder Buckthorn (Latin: Frangula Alnus) is a tall deciduous shrub native to Europe. Over the centuries, the plant spread throughout much of the world and can now be found in northern Africa, Turkey, the Caucasus Mountains, Xinijiang in western China and, eastern North America.
Throughout its history as a therapeutic plant, Alder Buckthorn has been prized by natural health experts for its ability to ease constipation and other ailments of the digestive system. Its efficacy in this regard is said to be due to the presence of anthraquinone, a class of naturally occurring phenols, in particular frangulin, a compound that forms part of the plants Latin name. According to some recent studies, the presence of anthraquinone may also give the plant, and a tisane made from its bark, cancer-fighting properties. (This has yet to be substantiated however.) Brew a cup yourself, and test out the purported wellness benefits or simply enjoy the unique flavor of Alder Buckthorn bark.
